Jean Cocteau's Worlds Poetics and Aesthetics

Jean Cocteau's Worlds. Poetics and Aesthetics introduces Jean Cocteau's oeuvre and is available as a dvd and a book. In part one David Gullentops analyses a vast series of poetic texts, starting from manuscripts. three creative principles (templum, front/back, intermediary) are distilled from Cocteau's oeuvre and extrapoleted to other art forms, in an effort to show the intermedial coherence within his work.
In part two Ann Van Sevenant performs an aesthetic reading, based upon the philosophers Cocteau drew most inspiration from : Platon, Heraclitus, Nietzsche and Sartre. Four angles of approach (sexuel love, monsters, friendship and death) are used to highlight the existential dimension of his visual work.
